SCUBA DIVING

Group or Individual bookings: (00353) 086 2795118 or skipper@brazenhussy.ie

The first and now second Brazen Hussy has over the last few years become a well known dive boat along Connemara’s coastal and island waters. We are an independent dive boat but frequently operate in conjunction with Scubadive West Ltd. both as an inshore vessel for the areas immediately around the dive centre, such as the conger eel dive at Inishbarna near the mouth of the Killary, and the reefs and the wreck of the Julia T off Lettergesh and Tully Cross. We also cover all the dive sites out and around the islands with a large operational area including the ground south of Achill Island which starts at The Bills Rocks and extends all the way to Cruagh Island off Claddaghduff which is west of Clifden and near to our drift dive site of Streamstown. There are several dive sites in this new operational area which up to now haven’t been included on our list due to the distances involved in motoring to them. However, with the new Brazen Hussy we are now able to include some new and extremely exciting dive sites on our menu.

John Dory and Diver
The new Brazen Hussy has been designed with diving as a primary activity. Up to now space has been at a premium on our dive boat but with the new Brazen Hussy we can offer an extraordinary amount of room for divers to get kitted up and move about the deck. This is a catamaran or twin hulled vessel and therefore has great width to her working deck. She is also longer overall than the old Brazen Hussy and it is interesting to make a comparison between the two: The old boat’s 135 sq. ft. to the new boat’s 270 sq. ft. offering exactly double the area with the same number of divers aboard. She has a dive bench designed to seat 12 divers in comfort, with individual bottle racks able to hold 24 bottles of all current sizes. Below each seating place is an individual box for storage of your weights, fins, masks, torches and all other dive equipment. On the transom of the vessel there are two doors leading to the water. The starboard door leads onto a divers lift platform, the port door straight into the water enabling a ‘Giant Stride’ entry to be made from either rather than a backward roll. This has two interesting benefits, firstly that you are able to see for yourselves that the water you are entering is free of all obstructions or other divers. Secondly there is no disorientation which sometimes can be the case when you haven’t rolled in backwards before. There is also a starboard midships entry door which may be used for similar entry into the water. When you have completed your dive and are ready to exit the water, then the diver’s lift will be hydraulically lowered and the diver may step aboard the platform and be carried up to deck level without the exertions and dangers of the old style dive ladders.

Inside the passenger area of the vessel, again we have been thinking of your comforts. Seating is available for 12 and there is a permanent supply of piping hot water for a warming cup of tea, coffee or soup. Together with this we have a 19” monitor in the passenger area which can play back DVD’s or should you wish, the video film shot on the dive but it has one other major ability. It is linked to the real time seafloor mapping available on the vessel.

Our intention is to be able to brief each dive site using current positional information. No longer will the artistic pencil sketches be a feature of your dive briefing on the Brazen Hussy. Modern technology has replaced the artist with a televised reproduction of a sonar image of every nook and cranny that you will encounter on your dive. The sonar image is like a photograph viewed from the surface in front of the vessel and down to the seabed and with this visual reference, navigation will be vastly improved and simplified, and it should also ensure that you miss none of the best parts of the dive site.
